FAQ

  • WHERE CAN YOU CAMP WITH A ROOFTOP TENT?
You can set up your tent anywhere camping is allowed. Be sure to check campsites ahead of time where the designated area for your tent type is. Check the guidelines of your local authorities and look for a level place where you can park.
  • ONCE YOU’VE REACHED YOUR DESTINATION, HOW DO YOU SET UP THE ROOFTOP TENT?"
We Offer two tent options. Fold-out (ABS ONE) or Pop-up (ALU ONE), both options are quicker than soft top tents. ALU ONE: It is the quickest setup in the market. Simply open the latches and push the tent up, the gas struts will pop up into place. It’s that simple. ABS ONE: Just pull open the latches, pull out the ladder and your tent is up. Adjust the ladder so it reaches the floor and then you are ready to enjoy it.
  • WHICH ROOFTOP TENT IS BEST FOR ME?
The distinguishing feature of the ALU ONE is its aluminum shell construction. A thick, powder-coated aluminum shell makes the ALU ONE strong enough to support its own rack system and carry a gear load on top of the tent. Whether it’s your kayaks, mountain bikes, or surfboards, you can mount it on top of the ALU ONE. The ABS ONE is smaller when packed and bigger when set up, also lighter, and suits any car size. Our ABS ONE model offers accessories that you can attach in a few minutes to make the most of your camping space. The ABS ONE annex is perfect for your family and will give your loved ones extra room, protecting them from the mosquitos and away from the elements.
  • WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF ROOFTOP TENT? HARDSHELL OR SOFT SHELL?
Hardshell all the way! Hardshell rooftop tents are more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient, much faster to set up & put away, quieter on windy days (less material flapping about), better insulated; and in our opinion much better looking.
  • WHAT KIND OF VEHICLE DOES TE ATA ROOFTOP TENTS FIT ON?
It can fit on any standard passenger vehicle, trucks, vans, 4x4 vehicles, and trailers. The ABS one suits small and big cars, while the ALU ONE is only for bigger cars.
  • WHAT DOES MY VEHICLE NEED TO FIT ROOFTOP TENTS?
The only thing your car needs is either a pair of roof racks or a roof basket. For the ABS ONE, we recommend a minimum dynamic load rating of 70kg. For the ALU ONE, we recommend a combined minimum dynamic load rating of 90kg. Check your local roof rack store for more information about your specific roof racks.
  • HOW STRONG DO MY ROOF RACKS NEED TO BE?
Roof Racks are sold with dynamic load ratings. The dynamic load rating is the maximum weight the vehicle roof racks can take while driving. This is the safe loading under emergency braking. The forces exerted on racks in an emergency braking situation are extreme. When your car is parked and your rooftop tent is open, the roof rack is not being subjected to abrupt changes in momentum caused by cornering, acceleration, and braking, so the “static load capacity” of rack systems comes into play. The static weight capacity, on other hand, is the weight capacity usually your car can take when parked. The static weight capacity is usually three times more than the dynamic weight capacity. Consequently, the majority of racks are well and truly capable of supporting a rooftop tent and two adults when parked up camping.
  • HOW HIGH DOES MY VEHICLE NEED TO BE?
Believe it or not, there is no minimum height. If you are looking at fitting an annex on your rooftop tent then our minimum recommended height is 1.65m. Any lower and the annex walls will be too long, but it would still work great with the tent awning accessory. For rooftop tent models without an annex, there isn’t a minimum vehicle height.
  • CAN THE ROOFTOP TENT BE MOUNTED ON THE TOP OF A UTE CANOPY?
Nowadays UTE canopies are made of aluminum, fiberglass, or steel. We recommend you to check with the canopy manufacturer what is the maximum load you can carry on it. It should be able to hold the tent weight plus two or three adults.
  • HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE TO PUT UP OR PACK DOWN?
Setting up our tents takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It doesn’t take long to set up the tent, but installing it on your roof rack takes a lot longer to accomplish.
  • HOW EASY IS IT TO GET A ROOFTOP TENT ON AND OFF A VEHICLE?
All that is needed is to unfasten the mounting hardware and lift the tent from your vehicle. It takes only about 10-15 minutes. Our models weigh between 60 - 90kg. You’ll need at least one strong partner to be nearby.
  • HOW WEATHER TIGHT ARE YOUR ROOF TENTS?
Te Ata rooftop tents are weather tight and made to NZ conditions meaning they can withstand harsh weather conditions like rain, wind, and even snow. Our products are made from quality durable materials as well as waterproof.
  • CAN I PACK UP MY TENT WHEN IT’S WET?
Yes, you can, in fact, on rainy days you may have no choice. The canvas shell will keep water out from inside the tent. Just make sure you close the windows and doors before packing it. We don’t recommend leaving the tent wet when packed up for more than three days. If you pack it away when wet, it should be opened up and dried out as soon as possible to prevent mold. Definitely dry your tent before storing.
  • WHAT ARE THEY LIKE IN THE WIND?
We tested our products in onshore gale winds camping by the beach. As with any tent, there is some noise in strong winds, but you can always park it somewhere more protected. If you still can’t find a protected spot, simply park your car with the hardshell side against the wind to minimize the noise. Compared to a conventional tent our product has a much stronger structure.
  • WILL A ROOFTOP TENT FIT IN MY GARAGE?
It depends on the height of your garage, your vehicle, and the profile/height of the roof rack you use. A measuring tape and a careful look are probably your best bet to get an accurate answer to this question. If you have a large or lifted vehicle and a low clearance garage, but really want to keep your tent in the garage, you could consider mounting the tent to an off-road trailer with an overhead rack system instead. This has the advantage of keeping the roof of your vehicle free for other cargo, and it means you can easily detach your camping equipment from your vehicle.
